2007-2008 History Lecture Series Season – November 5th, 2007
Peter Maraia, Director, Domino Sugar
Attendance – 106
In the lecture, Peter Maraia showed his dedication to the Chalmette Refinery of Domino Sugar. Operating in St. Bernard Parish since 1909, the facility was the largest cane sugar refinery in the western hemisphere and second in the world, and it refined approximately 70% of the raw sugar harvested in Southeast Louisiana. Producing and packaging over 1,800,000,000 lbs of over 200 cane sugar products annually, the plant employed over 300 personnel. The talk was augmented by a wealth of historical pictures, and the audience received free samples.
