Attendance – 119
The lecture commemorated the tenth anniversary of the founding of Nunez Community College, established on July 1, 1992, through the merger of St. Bernard Parish Community College and Elaine P. Nunez Technical Institute. The College has played an important role in the community of St. Bernard as well as in the creation of a state-wide community college system. The Honorable Sammy Nunez, former President of the Louisiana State Senate, spoke about overcoming intractable obstacles to create the first institution of higher education in Louisiana in decades. He credited the creation of the College as the single greatest accomplishment in his long and distinguished political career. Donna Clark, Dean of Student Affairs, told stories about the beginning of the College from an administrator’s perspective – like when a hurricane hit during the weekend of the first registration. Dr. Tommy Warner, Chancellor of the College and State Representative during the founding, recounted the growth of the College and spoke of the unlimited opportunity for the future.
