With the 9/11 attacks less than a month old, Curtis Manning gave an overview of the historical context that precipitated the actions of the terrorists. He detailed the geography of the Middle East, the Taliban and the Arab-Israeli conﬂict. He also discussed the roots of Arab-Islamic interaction, especially the fundamentalists’ hatred of the state of Israel, and the juxtaposition of the Arab-Islamic tradition versus the West’s individualism.
