Lecture Description


 The Third Regiment of the Louisiana Militia which fought in the Battle of New Orleans included the Islenos in its membership and included the full extent of the Cote d'Enbas or Lower Coast of the Mississippi River below New Orleans on both the east and west banks of the river.  This territory encompassed Algiers, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes.  Most of the membership of this regiment was taken prisoner during the December 23rd Night Battle.




Lecturer Description


 William Hyland has served as St. Bernard Parish Historian, director of Los Islenos Museum Complex, the chair of the 175th Anniversary Committee of the Battle of New Orleans, and president of The St. Bernard Historical Society.  His primary focus has been toward the preservation of the heritage and cultural identity of the Canary Islander colonists and their descendants.
